Employment Structure

Staff of Shoreline are employees, not contractors. This means that the employer is responsible for the following:

  • the supply of all equipment required to perform the job

  • the payment of the employer contributions for Employment Insurance and the Canada Pension Plan

  • intake of new clients

  • billing and bookkeeping

Staff are compensated based on a billable hours model. They are paid an hourly wage based on booked appointments for both direct time with the client and related indirect work for that client according to a specified ratio. For example, if an SLP staff member's wage is $x/hour and they see a client for one hour, the ratio is 1:1 - they are paid for the one hour with the client plus an additional hour of indirect work (e.g., communication with client, documentation, preparation), totaling two hours that they are paid for. This model allows flexibility for staff while ensuring that the practice remains viable and thus a source of employment.

As our staff prefer to work part time, we are not eligible to offer medical benefits at this time.

Work Environment

We strive to create a pleasant and supportive work environment. Staff share an office space that is separate from treatment rooms. This was mutually decided upon by the team at the time not only to most efficiently utilize work space, but also to foster a collaborative environment.

Shoreline is located at Paddlers Cove on Lake Banook in Dartmouth. Paddlers Cove is an iconic Dartmouth site that over the years has been home to an ice house, lumber yard, and restaurant. It is now home to a variety of businesses including a salon, cafe, allied health services, yoga studio, boutique, and other businesses. Although not the original building, the current Paddlers Cove building is an older Class B building. It was purchased by a new owner around 2017 and has undergone significant renovations (some work is ongoing). Parking at Paddlers Cove is free. The number 62 bus stops outside the building on Prince Albert Road.

Paddlers Cove is a dog-friendly building. Staff may not bring in their own dogs, however, as we have clients who have a fear of dogs and/or allergies.
