About Math Tutoring
Math tutoring is available for students in grades primary to eight or whose support needs are at that level. Sessions are one-on-one and are typically once a week for 45 minutes. Twice weekly sessions are available if a student would benefit from more frequent visits. This service is available at our Dartmouth office and by telepractice.
Our math program takes a two-pronged approach: a focus on computational fluency and an explicit, scaffolded approach to math instruction through JUMPMath. Computational fluency refers to having accurate and efficient methods for solving computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems). Students exhibit computational fluency when they demonstrate flexibility in the methods they choose, can understand and explain these methods, and produce accurate answers efficiently. Students demonstrate accuracy by getting the correct answer to a question. Students demonstrate flexibility when they are able to adapt and apply strategies to new question types. Students demonstrate efficiency when they are able to complete computations in a reasonable amount of time. JUMPMath focuses on explicitly teaching grade-level math concepts by breaking them up into small, manageable steps. The program focuses on building students’ math confidence and understanding of math concepts.
Services begin with a brief 30-minute evaluation to determine what the student's current strengths and needs are to set initial support goals. We also ask that guardians share their child's most recent report card and if a psychoeducational assessment has been completed to share the report. These documents help us understand how to best support the student.
